History of the only manufacture with every watchmaking expertise

The story of Seiko began in 1881, when a 22 year old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori’s company isstill dedicated to the perfection that the founder always strove to achieve.

In 1892 Kintaro Hattori bought a disused factory in Tokyo and Seikosha was formed (In Japanese, ‘Seiko’ means ‘exquisite’, ‘minute’ or ‘success’ and ‘sha’ means house). It was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first clocks and these marked the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the world’s most important manufacturers of timepieces.

Throughout the 1890’s, the success of Seikosha’s wall clock business increased, and Kintaro looked to broaden the range of his business. In 1895, he created a pocket watch, the Timekeeper. It was a vital step forward, without which the future of Seiko would have been very different as it paved the way for Japan’s first ever wrist watch.

In the beginning of the Taisho Era, pocket watches were still very popular and there were only a few wristwatches imported to Japan. Kintaro, however, was determined to be ‘one step ahead’ and embarked on the ardous task of creating Japan’s first ever wristwatch. In 1913, he succeeded and the Laurel was produced. In the early days, the company was able to produce only 30 to 50 watches a day, but, for the first time, Kintaro had established a lead on the rest.

In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake struck and the company’s headquarters and the Seikosha factory all burned down. A fresh start had to be made. Just after the earthquake, the company had created an entirely new watch and it went on sale in December 1923. It was the first to carry the name Seiko, introducing the world for the first time the brand name that was later to become synonymous with precision and accuracy, innovation and refinement.

The Seiko Quartz Astron was introduced in Tokyo on December 25, 1969. It delivered unmatched performance. It was accurate to within 5 seconds per month, 100 times more accurate than any other watch and it ran continuously for a year, or 250 times longer than most mechanical watches. The quartz revolution had begun.

  1. This watch is frequently compared to the SKX with many highlighting the negatives, this is unfair, it is not the SKX and is pitched at a different market. The targeted buyer is the one who likes dive ‘style’ watches.I am the target market.I see benefits over the SKX which make this watch the better purchase for me, here’s a brief list1. 27 different styles to chose from, you MUST see the one you like. (I got the Avocado)2. Hacking and hand winding, the SKX doesn’t have this.3. More options than the basic silver case, mine is gunmetal PVD coated, very nice.4. No need to mod it, the very fact that the SKX users mod their watches tells me that they are not completely happy with their treasured possession.5. The nato strap, at first I though this felt cheep, but it has now loosened up and is very comfortable.6. Orange secondhand (only applies to my choice), very nice complementary colour to the green.7. Applied indices and textured dial.I still think the Avocado is the best in this lineup. It is a fun, reasonably priced entry level automatic watch with bags of style. I have many watches, this one is getting all my wrist time. I have nothing negative to say about this watch.

  2. There is nothing I dislike about this watch.I love seiko watches. The previous one lasted yeas years at work ,but unfortunately it got badly damaged as I work outside. So I bought this to replace it and it is clearer and easier to read .Can’t fault this watch hence 5 stars all round.

  3. I had been looking for a used SKX and then saw this. It has the same great looks (better in my opinion due to the colour combination) Since I don’t need the extra water resistance this is spot on.Really pleased with it. Great colour combination. Pleasantly surprised by the supplied NATO strap but have since changed to a leather one and transferred over the original buckle.

  4. The media could not be loaded.  Been a fan of seiko watches from quite some time. I love the Color and the fitting. Strap is slightly longer but I guess can be adjusted.

  5. I have done a lot of research on this watch and hunted for a good price, which I have got from Amazon. My only minus is when I undid the box the watch was not on the cushion and there was no protective film on the watch face but otherwise I love my first Seiko

  6. Hi… having handled many by now, I was rather surprised to feel the Seiko5. I have had Seiko5 Sports Series 10 yrs back also, but the feel differs this time. This is a spot on winner, no doubts. The dial size is somewhat smaller as compared to general wear sizes but apt.Green over green was not expected yo be this beautiful! It’s a perfectly dark olive green unidirectional ( very smooth teeth) Seiko-coin shaped bezel mounted on a black hypercoated metal cradle, with a 4-oclock crown. Crown is not screw down. The dial per se is well crafted undulating surface green, with bold roundal indices ( luminosity be commented later) and arrow pointer hands with seconds hand demarcated with an orange colour roundal ended ( nice contrast on green). The back of the case is transparent showing the mini factory inside.Strap with this model is a nylon NATO matching green. For some, might be a bit confusing to wear..for me, it feels better than a metal. Rough handlers n keepers may go for the strap for ease n durability.Performance wise, yet to ascertain but a 4R36 movement is not new in Seiko machinery, hacking as well as manual winding is a valid additive. Water resistance is 10 Bar…more than enough for a routine usage. Serious divers DONOT GO FOR THIS.IT IS NOT A DIVER WATCH.Overall, very well done Seiko!Tnx to Team Amazon for a very swift delivery even during the new COVID normal. Keep it up!Hope this serves purpose to those who read it.Happy Timekeeping! Some Add ons after 3 days of usage:# Luminosity Check. Fabulous.. clear for one whole night.. that should be enough.# power reserve. Check. 40hrs# Handwinding + Hacking… a blessing… adds on to more accuracy.

  7. What a stunning watch. I had a classic, automatic SKX some time ago, this one is equally impressive. Love the military look and colors but what really surprised me was the case. I thought it’d black yet it’s a stone washed grey, absolutely gorgeous.

  8. Love this watch. It has a military vibe with the gunmetal metalwork and green strap. The avocado face is cool and the orange second hand finishes it off perfectly. It’s very comfortable to wear all day and is lightweight without feeling cheap.Lumibrite is useful. There are a lot of designs to chose from, I don’t think you will be disappointed with any.Amazon great as always, although delivery driver left it outside and I don’t think anyone heard the doorbell. Glad it wasn’t stollen.

  9. I own alot of watches and this is very nice the lume is excellent, my watch is about 7 seconds fast over 24 hours so not to bad, I will sort that out take the back off and adjust it, love the green and the face as a nice pattern 10/10

  10. Brilliant watch, beautiful mechanism and comfortable to wear, the seller has sent it promptly and well packaged.
