History of the only manufacture with every watchmaking expertise

The story of Seiko began in 1881, when a 22 year old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori’s company isstill dedicated to the perfection that the founder always strove to achieve.

In 1892 Kintaro Hattori bought a disused factory in Tokyo and Seikosha was formed (In Japanese, ‘Seiko’ means ‘exquisite’, ‘minute’ or ‘success’ and ‘sha’ means house). It was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first clocks and these marked the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the world’s most important manufacturers of timepieces.

Throughout the 1890’s, the success of Seikosha’s wall clock business increased, and Kintaro looked to broaden the range of his business. In 1895, he created a pocket watch, the Timekeeper. It was a vital step forward, without which the future of Seiko would have been very different as it paved the way for Japan’s first ever wrist watch.

In the beginning of the Taisho Era, pocket watches were still very popular and there were only a few wristwatches imported to Japan. Kintaro, however, was determined to be ‘one step ahead’ and embarked on the ardous task of creating Japan’s first ever wristwatch. In 1913, he succeeded and the Laurel was produced. In the early days, the company was able to produce only 30 to 50 watches a day, but, for the first time, Kintaro had established a lead on the rest.

In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake struck and the company’s headquarters and the Seikosha factory all burned down. A fresh start had to be made. Just after the earthquake, the company had created an entirely new watch and it went on sale in December 1923. It was the first to carry the name Seiko, introducing the world for the first time the brand name that was later to become synonymous with precision and accuracy, innovation and refinement.

The Seiko Quartz Astron was introduced in Tokyo on December 25, 1969. It delivered unmatched performance. It was accurate to within 5 seconds per month, 100 times more accurate than any other watch and it ran continuously for a year, or 250 times longer than most mechanical watches. The quartz revolution had begun.

10 thoughts on “Seiko Analog Black Dial Men’s Watch-SRPE57K1

  1. My normal watch is a Rolex Datajust, but, since receiving this I have not gone back. Once I had removed 2 links it fitted perfectly and with the winder down at 5 o’clock it is so comfortable to wear and of course the winder is now protected from accidentally being pulled out or turned, a major improvement and something that happened a lot on my other Seiko watch when putting it in and out of my golf bag. The biggest plus for this Seiko is the very readable dial and day date display, something that I particularly value, just a quick glance shows all. Aesthetically this is a very handsome, dare I say Manly watch which looks superb and wears so very lightly on the wrist. The link strap is well made and compliments the watch body, so in summary this has to be Seikos best effort to date and it is a pleasure to wear.

  2. What do you say about a watch that looks insane. Let other people appreciate. This is a watch you can wear to office, parties, casually etc.The golden outline in the dial may not look very attractive in the image on web/amazon, but trust me, once it’s on your wrist, it looks super classy.Setting up this watch was super easy, first set time to 6.30am, then set day & date to a day back for eg if today is 1st and Monday, then set it to 31st & Sunday. Go back again to time and rotate the crown till the date is changed (you have to rotate 17.5 hrs. It’s done. Read manual for more instructions.Although warranty card was not pre-filled (except for Sr. No.), Seiko being a great brand, you can visit any store with original bill and warranty card provided with the watch.

  3. Keeps perfect time, better than my Swiss movement watch looks great. one of my favourite to wear at work

  4. I’ve worn this watch for pretty much a month now since buying it, which is quite something considering I have 25 other watches to choose from. Ive taken it off the stainless steel bracelet for no other reason than I like a leather strap. The bracelet is “acceptable” for an affordable Seiko (it has a pressed clasp). It is a great watch, it reminds me a lot of the Tudor BB41.It’s comfortable and wears flat, it’s finished to a good standard, it has a decent water resistance(100m), without a screw down crown and it’s a great daily wear. This particular piece is running at +1 sec per day on my wrist, on average. After letting it completely wind down a couple of times, it pretty much runs to COSC standards. If it was Swiss we’d be talking big money. I love it. Should you buy it? Definitely.

  5. Nothing goes wrong with Seiko, perfect 40mm dial size, latest in Seiko 5 series. Hands and indices with gold borders. It looks better than black or silver dial models. Although I’m not great fan of steel bracelet, going to replace with rubber or synthetic strap. All together a great Seiko 5.

  6. Seiko brand name is enough and still now it is running well. Lets see in future any faults is found or not. One just feeling bad that country of origin is china written on the box.

  7. Nice watch to gift someone. They loved it to bits. Good quality built. Classy looking Automatic Japan Movement without the cost of a swiss.
