History of the only manufacture with every watchmaking expertise

The story of Seiko began in 1881, when a 22 year old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori’s company isstill dedicated to the perfection that the founder always strove to achieve.

In 1892 Kintaro Hattori bought a disused factory in Tokyo and Seikosha was formed (In Japanese, ‘Seiko’ means ‘exquisite’, ‘minute’ or ‘success’ and ‘sha’ means house). It was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first clocks and these marked the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the world’s most important manufacturers of timepieces.

Throughout the 1890’s, the success of Seikosha’s wall clock business increased, and Kintaro looked to broaden the range of his business. In 1895, he created a pocket watch, the Timekeeper. It was a vital step forward, without which the future of Seiko would have been very different as it paved the way for Japan’s first ever wrist watch.

In the beginning of the Taisho Era, pocket watches were still very popular and there were only a few wristwatches imported to Japan. Kintaro, however, was determined to be ‘one step ahead’ and embarked on the ardous task of creating Japan’s first ever wristwatch. In 1913, he succeeded and the Laurel was produced. In the early days, the company was able to produce only 30 to 50 watches a day, but, for the first time, Kintaro had established a lead on the rest.

In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake struck and the company’s headquarters and the Seikosha factory all burned down. A fresh start had to be made. Just after the earthquake, the company had created an entirely new watch and it went on sale in December 1923. It was the first to carry the name Seiko, introducing the world for the first time the brand name that was later to become synonymous with precision and accuracy, innovation and refinement.

The Seiko Quartz Astron was introduced in Tokyo on December 25, 1969. It delivered unmatched performance. It was accurate to within 5 seconds per month, 100 times more accurate than any other watch and it ran continuously for a year, or 250 times longer than most mechanical watches. The quartz revolution had begun.

  1. Its a looker. My first automatic and seiko 5 is the best one to start with if you want to collect. My only qualm is that the polish metal is soft since i see minor scratches within a month of purchase. I am a little clumsy too btw.

  2. The 40mm case size fits smoothly and looks good on the wrist. The automatic movement is a plus. However, the 41 hours power reserve claim by Seiko in the specifications is questionable. A full wind can last upto 18-20 hours once off the wrist. The polish on the steel case easily shows minor scratches so if you’re planning to use this roughly as a daily wear watch, you might want to be careful. Overall it’s a good entry level watch if you’re making your first investment into the world of mechanical watches.

  3. Seems to be good so far , nice finish . the auto winding mechanism will work only for a day or a bit over that, so one has to keep track, if the watch has not been worn / used .

  4. The media could not be loaded.  Amazing 40mm watch with incredible power reserve and super bright lume, also got a 32mm screen protector as a precautionary measure….Firstly the design is combination of a divers watch and a dress watch, I always liked the utility of a divers watch but the Bezel appeared a little off for it to be a daily driver.Seiko has done a remarkable job by getting rid off that Bezel from a typical divers watch and produced a much slimmer still retaining that divers dial.As for the sweeping movement of seconds hand, it beats 6 times per sec (21,600 bph), the motion is smooth but it’s not as smooth as the high end spring drive or Hi Beat Grand Seikos, one benifit of this mid beat is the longevity of the internal gears and parts. It supports hacking and hand winding, the power in the main spring lasts for about 24hrs on one full wound. The lume is bright as a full moon but doesn’t last long, it’s quite expected for this price segment. Not a big fan of steel bracelets, got myself a lizard pattern strap.

  5. It is an amazing introductory starter watch with its lug to lug measuring at 44mm is perfect for slim wrists. One con would be the lack of micro adjustments. You’ll only get one micro adjustment slot so getting the perfect fit will be difficult. Overall an amazing addition to your collection.

  6. The media could not be loaded.  The watch is looking very good, premium & gives me a Gentleman/Professional feelings. The watch accuracy so far is very good (+5-10 secs a day i.e. 24hrs. Sometimes not even 1 second in 24hrs.) . The lume is good but when charged with Sunlight it’s better. The bracelet is also of good quality. The size of the watch fits perfectly for my wrist which i think is around 6.5-6.8 inch but I’am not sure, but sure! It will look good on smaller wrist no doubt. Value for money for this Seiko 5 watch is very good.Thank you
