History of the only manufacture with every watchmaking expertise

The story of Seiko began in 1881, when a 22 year old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori’s company isstill dedicated to the perfection that the founder always strove to achieve.

In 1892 Kintaro Hattori bought a disused factory in Tokyo and Seikosha was formed (In Japanese, ‘Seiko’ means ‘exquisite’, ‘minute’ or ‘success’ and ‘sha’ means house). It was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first clocks and these marked the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the world’s most important manufacturers of timepieces.

Throughout the 1890’s, the success of Seikosha’s wall clock business increased, and Kintaro looked to broaden the range of his business. In 1895, he created a pocket watch, the Timekeeper. It was a vital step forward, without which the future of Seiko would have been very different as it paved the way for Japan’s first ever wrist watch.

In the beginning of the Taisho Era, pocket watches were still very popular and there were only a few wristwatches imported to Japan. Kintaro, however, was determined to be ‘one step ahead’ and embarked on the ardous task of creating Japan’s first ever wristwatch. In 1913, he succeeded and the Laurel was produced. In the early days, the company was able to produce only 30 to 50 watches a day, but, for the first time, Kintaro had established a lead on the rest.

In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake struck and the company’s headquarters and the Seikosha factory all burned down. A fresh start had to be made. Just after the earthquake, the company had created an entirely new watch and it went on sale in December 1923. It was the first to carry the name Seiko, introducing the world for the first time the brand name that was later to become synonymous with precision and accuracy, innovation and refinement.

The Seiko Quartz Astron was introduced in Tokyo on December 25, 1969. It delivered unmatched performance. It was accurate to within 5 seconds per month, 100 times more accurate than any other watch and it ran continuously for a year, or 250 times longer than most mechanical watches. The quartz revolution had begun.

  1. An original watch…a nice piece of an automatic watch . The lumes are exceptional…a bit heavy on wrist but a head turner for sure.

  2. Seems Authentic, nice and beautiful though the dial could have been bigger.Update:It needs to be worn daily. If you plan to wear once in few days, it stops. A disadvantage i now come to know of the Automatics…

  3. Seiko 5 is an extraordinary beginners watch who wants to be introduced into the world of horology.Seiko 5 originated in the footsteps of the legendary seiko skx dive watch with a screw down crown and water resistance upto 300 meters.unlike the skx the seiko 5 does not sport a screw down crown……i mean why not? Thus affecting the resistance rating to probably 100 m.the 5 stands for 5 features which are1. Diaflex (unbreakable mainspring),2. Diashock (Seiko’s shock resistant design, equivalent to the Swiss “Incabloc”),3. Automatic winding,4. day/date indication, and5. Water resistant.Movement: seiko 4r36 with hacking and is an automatic mechanismBeats:21800Chassis: gunmetal stainless steel✔️Lume: sufficiently bright✔️Strap: olive drab natoPros:Price ❤️Movement❤️Cons:Non screw down crown ❗Same old diver design (also a pro)❗Bezel has maybe a little backpush❗Closest competition:Seiko snkp17Srpd55k1,65k1,69k1Srpd81k1FossilME1138,ME1161Fossil grant sportCitizen automatic8354Citizen automatic super titaniumCitizen promaster aqualandCitizen ecodrive AT2144Mathey tissot automatic HB611251ATABUInvicta pro diver ❗Invicta speedway ❗Orient ray❤️Orient makoOrient bambino❤️Vostok amphibiaVostok komandirskieTimex TWEG16704Timex TWEG16300Non automatic competitionG-Shock GG1000 aka MudmasterGSG-100 1ADRGA-1000Starking

  4. I bought this as an everyday work watch and so far it’s been fine. The build is sturdy and the finish good. It came fitted with a nato style strap but I have changed this to a silicone type, only because my job means that my hands are often in water, hence the importance of a properly waterproof watch. It’s been fine, so far, in this regard.Accuracy is fine, for what is after all, a budget automatic movement. As supplied, mine gains about 5-7 seconds in 24 hours. It’s easy to set as it has a hacking movement. So, it’s easy to read, solidly built and reasonably accurate. I’m happy with my purchase and would recommend this Seiko. Prices seem to vary, quite a lot, so check out different sellers.Update, after wearing this watch for a few weeks. Now that the movement has settled in, it’s accuracy has become much better. It is now running at about 1 second fast a day. That is as good as a high end Swiss movement! I’m very impressed. On the downside, the Seiko Hardlex glass has picked up a couple of scratches. It’s a shame they don’t use sapphire glass. I might replace the glass at some point. It’s not bad but still, it could be better. That said, I’m very happy with this watch.

  5. – Seiko is a watch brand that just about everyone recognizes, whether they are watch enthusiast or not.- This quality watch appears to be very simple. And I find it classy due to its overall simplicity. Accordingly, it is very easy to wear on casual days and can match with your looks and style.- Accuracy is rated at -20/+40 seconds per day, which isn’t exactly a chronometer, but more than reasonable for the price. A simple time adjustment every few days or even once a week will keep your time precise.About the seller:- Friendly- Contacted me personally when the packet was dispatched- Shared tracking details at every step- Again called me when the watch was deliveredI am extremely happy with the watch and the service that has been provided by the seller!Best of luck with your purchase!

  6. There is not much to say when you want to buy a Seiko watch. They just have the best value for money. The SRPD is the newer ‘diver’ line-up from Seiko. A lot of people criticise the SRPD models because the don’t have a screw down crown and water resistance is ‘only’ 10 bar. But 99,9% of the people won’t actually dive with it.

  7. Wanted a easy to read weather proof, easy to wear and durable watch, and chose the Seiko with NATO strap. So far, so good. I would order another one based on my experiences so far with this one.

  8. Seiko makes one of the best mechanical watches , some of the Seiko’s are even better that some of the Rolexes out there, that being said absolutely love the watch great fit for medium sized wrists not exactly a diver but great for everyday use..Just keep in mind it’s an automatic mechanical watch so if you stop wearing it one needs to adjust date/ time, hence If you don’t plan on using it make sure you shake the watch gently for about 20 seconds in order to wind it’s mechanism.
