History of the only manufacture with every watchmaking expertise

The story of Seiko began in 1881, when a 22 year old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori’s company isstill dedicated to the perfection that the founder always strove to achieve.

In 1892 Kintaro Hattori bought a disused factory in Tokyo and Seikosha was formed (In Japanese, ‘Seiko’ means ‘exquisite’, ‘minute’ or ‘success’ and ‘sha’ means house). It was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first clocks and these marked the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the world’s most important manufacturers of timepieces.

Throughout the 1890’s, the success of Seikosha’s wall clock business increased, and Kintaro looked to broaden the range of his business. In 1895, he created a pocket watch, the Timekeeper. It was a vital step forward, without which the future of Seiko would have been very different as it paved the way for Japan’s first ever wrist watch.

In the beginning of the Taisho Era, pocket watches were still very popular and there were only a few wristwatches imported to Japan. Kintaro, however, was determined to be ‘one step ahead’ and embarked on the ardous task of creating Japan’s first ever wristwatch. In 1913, he succeeded and the Laurel was produced. In the early days, the company was able to produce only 30 to 50 watches a day, but, for the first time, Kintaro had established a lead on the rest.

In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake struck and the company’s headquarters and the Seikosha factory all burned down. A fresh start had to be made. Just after the earthquake, the company had created an entirely new watch and it went on sale in December 1923. It was the first to carry the name Seiko, introducing the world for the first time the brand name that was later to become synonymous with precision and accuracy, innovation and refinement.

The Seiko Quartz Astron was introduced in Tokyo on December 25, 1969. It delivered unmatched performance. It was accurate to within 5 seconds per month, 100 times more accurate than any other watch and it ran continuously for a year, or 250 times longer than most mechanical watches. The quartz revolution had begun.

  1. Value for money!!!A lovely watch, You won’t regret buying this beautiful piece. Go for it. Thanks to the seller for delivering the product so quickly. Highly recommend this seller.

  2. After a lot of research I have finally bought this watch. Perfect weight, perfect looks, perfect material. All things are fine. People buy automatic watches to have a look of machine through the dial, but I bought this model as it looks professional and casual both. and in Seiko those open machine dial type of models are costly. :PI bought it from Ramawatchboutique seller. I was not sure about the quality and if it is refurbished as I heard a lot about it that you will get refurbished watches online. Before buying it I checked with a local retailer as well, who was saying that they will give you blank warranty card and it could be refurbished. But as it had 10 days return policy, and checked all the things with amazon customer care, I ordered the watch. After getting the delivery, I started making video, due to the fear 😉 but everything was fine. Watch was brand new with all the wrappers, scratch less, FEB22 made and Mar22 imported. I got it verified and checked with a Ethos showroom as well, that its an original product. and important thing is, seller provided me filled warranty card with their stamp. My experience was good.

  3. Very good watch.. Runs on seiko’s luxury mechanism. Big fan of lume.. Brighter than any watch.. Its only downside is it is pvd coated to black and very vulnerable to scratches and smudges. Be careful during setting the day date complications. Don’t change the date between 8 pm. and 4 am. It might break the mechanism.. Read the manual very carefully before even touch the watch. 😅 And selleris very responsive and friendly.. I purchased it from the watch agency through amazon. Seller provides each and every minute details regarding the condition of the watch. Do buy it if you are not a rugged user.

  4. 5 Sports series are gateway into premium watch world. Its absolutely stunning in this configuration, quality is, as expected from a Seiko, top notch. The only problem is once you are introduced to quality you cant just stop with one, can turn into a rabbit hole!

  5. This new Seiko 5 Sports watch is a great timepiece. I’ve always been a fan of the Seiko 5 lineup. So when they discontinued the old ones and introduced this sports lineup, I made my mind that I need get one for myself. When I got this one, I was really overwhelmed to find that these watches have astounding similarities with the legendary SKX series. And guess what, I ended up buying another one (the one with the blue dial) for my dad. With the newer movement, the seconds hand can now be hacked while setting the time. It has great lume, bright enough for pitch dark conditions. This is not a typical diver’s watch, but it does give you that feel. You wouldn’t want to dive into the sea with this on your wrist, but swimming pools won’t be a problem. The metal bracelets are good looking, though I would have preferred the jubilee style bracelets. In some watches, the bezels may not be perfectly aligned (which has been a downside of the SKX series too). Thankfully mine doesn’t have that issue. This is the 2nd Seiko in my collection and I am absolutely in love with this watch.
