History of the only manufacture with every watchmaking expertise

The story of Seiko began in 1881, when a 22 year old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori’s company isstill dedicated to the perfection that the founder always strove to achieve.

In 1892 Kintaro Hattori bought a disused factory in Tokyo and Seikosha was formed (In Japanese, ‘Seiko’ means ‘exquisite’, ‘minute’ or ‘success’ and ‘sha’ means house). It was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first clocks and these marked the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the world’s most important manufacturers of timepieces.

Throughout the 1890’s, the success of Seikosha’s wall clock business increased, and Kintaro looked to broaden the range of his business. In 1895, he created a pocket watch, the Timekeeper. It was a vital step forward, without which the future of Seiko would have been very different as it paved the way for Japan’s first ever wrist watch.

In the beginning of the Taisho Era, pocket watches were still very popular and there were only a few wristwatches imported to Japan. Kintaro, however, was determined to be ‘one step ahead’ and embarked on the ardous task of creating Japan’s first ever wristwatch. In 1913, he succeeded and the Laurel was produced. In the early days, the company was able to produce only 30 to 50 watches a day, but, for the first time, Kintaro had established a lead on the rest.

In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake struck and the company’s headquarters and the Seikosha factory all burned down. A fresh start had to be made. Just after the earthquake, the company had created an entirely new watch and it went on sale in December 1923. It was the first to carry the name Seiko, introducing the world for the first time the brand name that was later to become synonymous with precision and accuracy, innovation and refinement.

The Seiko Quartz Astron was introduced in Tokyo on December 25, 1969. It delivered unmatched performance. It was accurate to within 5 seconds per month, 100 times more accurate than any other watch and it ran continuously for a year, or 250 times longer than most mechanical watches. The quartz revolution had begun.

  1. This great product from Seiko would be an ideal transition into the mechanical watch space for anyone. Clean and classic look, with a shiny blue dial enhances its appearance. You would want to go to a specialist watchmaker to shorten it’s strap as it is quite tricky, but it’s completely worth the price.

  2. The media could not be loaded.  Can’t say enough about this watch! It’s my first automatic watch, l love looking through clear case back to see inner mechanical working, highly recommended. One I am notice is the bazel is very soft and has scratches/dented easily, as has the bracelet, but that’s with wearing it almost daily, thank you seller,

  3. Great watch, on daily use, it doesn’t lose much time. Lume is awesome, glows for a while in dark. Only catch is the glass got scratched in a month but it is still sturdy glass and watch is just a must buy if u want an automatic…

  4. After years of buying Casio G-Shocks and Timex Expeditions, I finally came to terms with the fact that a watch doesn’t necessarily have to be multifunctional, fancy-looking and gimmicky to be a worthy timepiece worth wearing, not that I didn’t admire simple watches. I personally don’t believe in spending a fortune on watches so was looking for something that doesn’t break the bank. Fortunately for me, the smartwatch bug never bit me. After a few bad experiences with being sold old and non functional watches at huge discounts here on Amazon (and elsewhere), I decided to go in for a “conventional” watch, and what better than a Seiko? This Seiko 5 SNKA05K1 is a classic, no nonsense, minimalist, tough, self-winding timepiece devoid of fancy gimmickery which one seldom uses anyway. You can never go wrong with a Seiko especially with its automatic Japanese movement. You really don’t need another watch, nor a battery change and are assured of accurate timekeeping literally forever. Agreed that although there are several more Seiko models out there (including the fancy ones for those who have an unlimited bank balance), this beautiful elegant navy blue dial stainless steel watch with day and date counters, is a real delight to have on your wrist. With Seiko’s well known reputation, this watch will last a lifetime even after taking a fair amount of beating from the everyday life. I’m extremely happy with my decision to go in for this watch, and absolutely love the watch itself! Perhaps someday I’ll go in for the white dial SNKA01K1 or the black dial SNKA23K1.P.S.- Found out that this watch is available for 6500/- in my city, but I got a 10% cashback on Amazon, so that was great!- Came with warranty card stamped by a Seiko authorised dealer.- I would recommend this watch for people with slim wrists.

  5. Well, watch is good, but the supplier of this watch seems, kept for showpiece to the customer, for that reason it seems bit old in the first instant. Please never send such watches to prime customers. Nevertheless, the product is fine working nice. No problem to go for it.

  6. The SNKA05K1 has a beautiful deep-blue dial-face – it really stands out!Pros:- Awesome look; at 11mm thick, not the best to hide under the cuff, but better than most other Automatics out there in India. Titan does not have any nearly as slim.- Looks bigger than the 38mm mentioned: in a good way!- Good heft; not too heavy on the wrist- Large dia clear-cover on the back; you get a really nice view of the movement- Mine keeps excellent time: +1 min after 8 days- Very good power reserve: stated to be ~38hrs; mine went up to 46 when I last checkedCons:- Weird lugs: I hate metal bracelets, so I had it switched to a leather strap. Due to the weird lugs, the strap has to be cut to fit. It looks a little funny, but the watchmaker did a good job on mine at a local watch store.

  7. My first automatic watch.* It has nice look , dial colour is very elegant.* It got lume.* Dial size is doesn’t look small it’s ok.* Not heavy on wrist.* I’m never going back to quartz. I love it.

  8. Excellent timepiece…on time delivery by Amazon. I bought if for Rs.6100/- on “Great Indian Festival”2019. I recommend this for..1.A Trusted Brand for a decade2.Best reliability proved model which my dad used for a long period.3. Simple & Elegant design4.Invoice, owners Manual, warranty card received with this pack.5.Best buy compare to market price6.Its an unisex model who can easily used as a rememberence after your life.7.Economical & value for money.

  9. Gifted it to my dad. He went crazy about it. Very nice product. Quality as expected from Seiko. Package was little damaged but overall product was satisfying.

  10. The media could not be loaded.  This is hands down the most value for money watch I own! Amazed by the attention to detail at this 38mm dial!!
