Faculty of Imagination

“The faculty of Imagination is the great spring of human activity, and the principal source of human improvement. As it delights in presenting to the mind scenes and characters more perfect than those which we are acquainted with, it prevents us from ever being completely satisfied with our present condition, or with our past attainments, and engages us continually in the pursuit of some untried enjoyment, or of some ideal excellence. Destroy this faculty, and the condition of man will become as stationary as that of the brutes.” – Dugald Stewart

The power of imagination that we humans are ordained with is the greatest gift of nature. Since the early human evolution, the life of humans, lifestyle, formation of society, and its norms are all results of vivid imagination of never-ending possibilities to satisfy our hunger of unknown and unseen.

Our food used to be raw meat and fruits; we learnt to cook food. We used to wear animal skins then we started weaving cloths. We found shelter in caves then we learnt to build houses. Living in isolation wasn’t beneficial for us; we thought of living together as many as possible to stop other species to interfere into our habitat and to give efforts to cultivate crops. We discovered mutually benefited social setup. Need to go to the woods became obsolete requirement unless for pleasure. This journey to change everything we have into something that can facilitate our lifestyle began long ago and continuously becoming more and more complicated day be day. These are the results of our imagination that some thing could be better, can be done in a better way, with less efforts, with more beautiful manner. The restlessness in our heart to not stay satisfied with what we already have is what brought humans to its present-day state. Art, science, commerce in the very core of their logical fabric is based on our needs; sometimes it is our mental need, sometimes it is physical lifestyle and requirement and sometimes it is fulfilling our desire to gain and to change and to improve and finally to reach something no one ever imagined except some visionaries.

The real threat nowadays humanity is facing that being imaginative have become an eye-soar to some people. People who are partially or completely submerged into the everyday lifestyle and processes that make it easy which kept them so illusioned that they have forgotten the fundamental rule of the greater human society. It is a society that encompasses not only humans with different colour, culture, ethnicity, habitat but also every living and non-living subjects and objects that exist on this planet. Any change in the process of progression is always disturbing. Not everyone can accept it readily but over time they will realise it and take advantage of it. That’s human nature: resistance, acceptance, exploitation and ignorance of the resultants.

Modern day human should think twice or may be more before demonstrating violence against who are investing time and effort in the business of imagination and acting upon it to create something wonderful which might be a game changer in long term for the existence of humanity on this Earth.
